Shivaji University has directed to all its affiliated colleges apply for the College with Potential Excellence (CPE) scheme. This scheme is run by UGC and under this scheme the selected colleges will receive an amount of Rs. 1.5 crore as funds from UGC.

The Shivaji University has directed to all its affiliated colleges that they should apply for the College with Potential Excellence (CPE) scheme run by University Grants Commission (UGC). Under this scheme, if a college gets selected, it would receive an amount of Rs. 1.5 crore as funds from UGC for the overall development of the academics and administration.

The University has issued a circular on January 21, saying all the principals of affiliated colleges to send applications to UGC before January 31. The deadline set by UGC to forward the applications is set to be February 15. Earlier, the UGC has made it clear in its January 16 letter to the universities that the college should authenticate the submitted data before submitting the proposals. In letter it was stated that, “The proposals obtained by the university must be scrutinized by a committee. The panel should be headed by the vice-chancellor and should compromise the registrar, college development council and two-three experts from outside the university.” Maximum of eight colleges would become eligible for the recommendation by the university on the order of their merit.

Last year, UGC has registered 79 applications of which only 36 made it to the mark to get included in the CPE scheme, across the country. The colleges were reviewed in the month of November and December last year for their evaluation under the scheme.

The CPE scheme was launched by UGC to identify colleges that are showing promise and are maintaining high standards in teaching, research and extension activities. The funds are provided to the colleges to improve the quality of infrastructure and strengthen its academics through inclusion of new and innovative programmes. The aim of the scheme is to make teaching, research and outreach programmes come at par with the global standards.

In the scheme’s first and second years (2004-05 and 2006-07), the UGC funded 97 colleges. It is expected to include more and more colleges and help building a better education system around the country from the scheme.
