Things to Know About NDA & NA Examination

While the candidates opted for NDA, would be sent for their training in respective wing of National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla (Maharashtra) which is affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) for awarding degree.

National Defence Academy (NDA) & Naval Academy (NA) Examination (commonly known as NDA Exam) is being organised by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for admission to the Army, Navy and Air Force wings of NDA for year wise courses and Indian Naval Academy year wise Course.

The Candidates who qualify the different stages of NDA & NA exam and willing to Joining Indian Naval Academy would undergo four years B. Tech course and would be given opportunity to join Executive & Technical Branches of Indian Navy.

While the candidates opted for NDA, would be sent for their training in respective wing of National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla (Maharashtra) which is affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) for awarding degree.

The candidates after getting admission are called as Cadets. The cadets who successfully complete the program are sent to their respective training academies for one year of training before granting of commission: army cadets go to IMA at Dehradun, Air Force cadets to AFA at Dundigal, Hyderabad, and naval cadets to INA, Ezhimala, Kerala. A cadet can only decline a commission in case of a serious permanent medical condition caused during the program.

NDA & NA Examination

UPSC Conducts NDA & NA Examination twice a year, usually in the months of April and September for which UPSC issues notifications in months of December/January and June respectively. Each year approximately 7 lac candidates appear to NDA & NA exam conducted two times in a year and termed as NDA & NA Examination (I) and NDA & NA Examination (II).

Data wise, out of almost 3.5 lac candidates appearing for NDA exam each time, only 9000 are called for interview by SSB (Services Selection Board). The candidates willing to join Air Force would additionally go for a Pilot Aptitude Battery Test.  Finally, 300-350 cadets are accepted to the academy each semester. About 66 cadets are accepted for the Air Force, 39 for the Navy and 195 for the Army.

The NDA & NA Examination is followed by extensive interviews (conducted by SSB) covering general aptitude, psychological testing, team skills as well as physical and social skills, along with medical tests.

Candidates willing to appear NDA & NA Exam must be 12th pass of 10+2 pattern (for army) and 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics (for Air Force and Navy). Appearing candidates are also eligible to appear the NDA & NA exam.

The National Defence Academy (NDA), established in 1954, is the Joint Services academy of the Indian Armed Forces, where cadets of the three services, the Army, the Navy and the Air Force train together before they go on to pre-commissioning training in their respective service academies. The NDA is located at Khadakwasla near Pune, Maharashtra and has a large campus of 7015 acres. It is the first tri-service academy in the world.
