The University Grants Commission (UGC) released the new criteria for qualifying NET examination just before 3 days of this nationwide eligibility test. The important part of the change prescribed is, amongst the candidates who have made through the minimum marks, a merit list would be prepared–subject and category wise– using the aggregate marks of all the three papers secured by the candidates. The twist is, that only fifteen percent candidates for each subject and category will qualify for ‘eligibility for lectureship’ only.
To understand this further, lets delve a little further in the intricate detailing. Paper one, which will be general in nature, will assess the teaching or the research aptitude of the candidate. It will test the reasoning ability comprehension, divergent thinking and general awareness of the candidate.
On the other hand, paper two will consist of fifty objective type compulsory questions , where the questions will be completely based on the subject selected by the candidates.
And finally, paper three will consist of seventy five objective type compulsory questions from the subject selected by the candidate, where each question will comprise 2 marks.
Hence forth, the candidates would be required to score minimum marks in each paper separately. Which means 40%, 40% & 50% for general category, 35%, 35% & 45% for OBC category and 35%, 35% and 40% for SC/ST/PWD candidates in Paper I, II & III respectively.
It should also be noted that, a separate merit list for the award of JRF will be prepared from amongst the NET qualified candidates that would be figured in the merit list.
The examination which is to be held on 30 December 2012, has a whopping 7.8 Lakh candidates already registered . The examination would be conducted in 77 centres across the country in 78 subjects.
