The University Grants Commission (UGC) has set up an ad hoc committee to examine a proposal for amendment of the UGC Act that empowers a college to grant degrees, said the minister of state for HRD Shashi Tharoor on 9 December 2013.
This move has been taken to add worth in the commission’s detailed guidelines for autonomous colleges seeking them to ensure proper management of academic, financial and general administrative affairs in their campus.
According to the guidelines, if an autonomous college fails to maintain standards, the UGC and the affiliating university would demand it to maintain standards or even consider revoking the autonomous status of that college.
In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Tharoor said that any autonomous college that has got clean chit one by the expert committee for three successive reviews after being granted autonomy can function autonomously forever and that there will be no further reviews by the UGC’s visiting committee.
