A reaction is second order with respect to a reactant. If the concentration of the reactant is   tripled, then the rate of reaction becomes

(a) 9 times

(b) 3 times

(c) 36 times

(d) no change

Solution 1:

Let the concentration of the reactant [A] = a

Rate of reaction,

R = k[A]2

= ka2

[A] = 3a,

Rate of the reaction will be,

R’ = k(3a)2

= 9ka2

= 9R

Hence, the rate of the reaction will increase by 9 times.

Hence, the correct option is (a).

In a first order reaction, the concentration of the reactant decreases from 0.8 M to 0.4 M in 15 min. The time taken for the concentration to change from 0.1 M to 0.025 M is

(a) 30 min

Solution 2:

Order = 1,

Since concentration changes from 0.8 M to 0.4 M in 15 min

T50 =15 min

If concentration changes from 0.1 M to 0.025 M

T75 = ?

T75 = 2 × T50 = 2 × 15 = 30 min

Hence, the correct option is (a).
