To provide vocational education programme in various areas of manufacturing sector to impart skills in youth to make them employable, a group of Swiss companies has planned to set up a Vocational Education centre in Pune.
The Centre of Excellence for Manufacturing is scheduled to be set up by the Swiss entities in association with the Pune- based Malhotra Weikfield Foundation. Among the swiss involvements there are five entities that are setting up the centre in Pune. The names of these entities are, Burckhardt Compression, Syngenta Foundation, Sulzer India, Rieter Foundation and Hilti.
The centre is expected to be operational from the 2016-17 academic session. It would offer four year courses in Polymechanics, mechatronics, welding and design. The firm Burckhardt Compression which is one of the partners among the five entities is a machinery manufacturing segment. Apart from these, the centre would host a Swiss Centre of Excellence for Agriculture in order to train the students in agri-entrepreneurs and agri-technicians.
Centre of manufacturing would take up 24 students per year for the courses. Students who would secure at least 35 percent marks in mathematics in their 10th standard would be eligible to apply for the course. After two years of their studies the students would get an opportunity to work in the Swiss companies for few days, who would take up the four-year programme in the centre. In the Pune region alone there are more than 20 Swiss companies that have manufacturing facilities.
