Nijut Moina Scheme: Assam Gov's Aid for School Girls; Check Eligibility and Stipend Amount

To combat child marriage, the Assamese government launched the "Nijut Moina" initiative. It is an important program with the aim of stopping child marriages in the state. 

With child marriage being a major issue in the state, this campaign tries to encourage females to pursue higher education.

Nijut Moina: Stipend Amount

The "Nijut Moina" program offers monthly stipends or financial assistance for female students enrolled in classes 11 through graduate programs. 

The amount of financial assistance they will get is as follows:

Nijut Moina: Eligibility Criteria

Students must fulfill two requirements in order to be eligible for these stipends:

  • They must do well academically and attend school on a regular basis.
  • They have to pledge to wait to get married until after they have completed their graduation.

It is noteworthy that this program is ineligible for the daughters of government officials.

Objective of Assam’s Nijut Moina Scheme

The program, headed by Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister, aims to end child marriage in Assam by 2026. By offering financial support, the program encourages girls to pursue higher education as an alternative to getting married young. 

The "Nijut Moina" programme, which has a total investment of Rs 1,500 crore, aims to assist 10 lakh (one million) female students.

The scheme aims to:

  • encourage more girls to pursue higher education.
  • sponsore the education of the Assam family's daughters to ease the household's financial burden.
  • increase educational possibilities in order to combat child marriage.

Child Marriage in Assam 

A notable 81% drop in child marriage instances was seen in 20 Assamese districts between the years 2021–2022 and 2023–2024, indicating the success of prior government efforts. The government of Assam now wants to bring long-term societal changes by encouraging the education of the girl child of the family. This newly launched scheme has the capacity to increase the number of school-going girls in the state. Moreover, by stopping child marriage the scheme will also enhance the health outcomes for expectant mothers and their babies
