Humpy Koneru won Final Tournament of FIDE Women Grand Prix Series
India’s Humpy Koneru won the sixth and final tournament of the FIDE Women Grand Prix Series chess in Doha in March 2011.
India’s Humpy Koneru won the sixth and final tournament of the FIDE Women Grand Prix Series chess in Doha in March 2011. The victory qualifies her to play in the 2011 World Championship match against the reigning chess champion Hou Yifan of China. Koneru defeated Zhu Chen to claim the victory.
Humpy Koneru who emerged the winner of the series became the the new challenger for the Women's World Championship which FIDE now intends to make an annual contest.
16 year-old Hou Yifan of China is the current Women's World Champion as she earned the title in a giant KO event in Turkey in December 2010. Hou Yifan will face the winner of the Grand Prix in a 10-game match later in 2011.
The sixth and final tournament in the Women's Grand Prix series was played from 20 Feb - 6 March 2011 in Doha, Qatar.
