With the beginning of Diwali celebrations in India, Western Railway (WR) has arranged 200 special trains to handle the high travel demand during the Diwali and Chhath Puja seasons. On October 29 alone, over 120 of these trains ran, according to Indian Railways.
Of these, around 40 trains will be managed by the Mumbai Division, with 22 heading to major destinations in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Odisha.
Extra Coaches for Festival Crowd
These special trains will run alongside regular services, with extra coaches added to accommodate the increase in passenger volume, according to Indian Railways. Western Railway's chief public relations officer, Vineet Abhishek, stated that these actions demonstrate the railroad's dedication to satisfying the increased demand during the holiday season.
"To effectively handle demand, both divisional and headquarters teams are closely monitoring these services with real-time waitlist tracking," Abhishek added.
Eastern Railways Adds 50 More Trains
As part of these initiatives, Eastern Railway has launched 400 new services and 50 special trains to facilitate travel during Diwali and Chhath Puja. According to Kaushik Mitra, public relations officer for Eastern Railway, there are now 50 special trains this season, up from 33 last year.
Lesson Learnt from Bandra Incident
In response to the recent stampede at Mumbai's Bandra station, Indian Railways has increased staffing levels at key stations, such as Ahmedabad, Surat, Udhna, Vadodara, and Bandra Terminus. In order to manage overcrowding, platform ticket sales at several Mumbai Division stations, including Mumbai Central, Dadar, Bandra Terminus, and Borivali, have been temporarily suspended until November 8.
Extra Ticket Counters at some Key Stations
In order to provide passengers with sufficient access to ticketing services, additional ticket counters and automatic ticket vending machines (ATVMs) are fully operating at Bandra Terminus, Surat, and Udhna, along with extra shifts at Vapi and Valsad stations.
