Pawan Hans Mi-17 helicopter caught fire and plunged into a gorge in Tawang city of Arunachal Pradesh on 19 April 2011. The accident resulted in the death of 17 persons, including three crew members were killed and six others were injured.
The chopper was flying to Tawang from the Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati. Pilots Captain Varun Gupta and Captain A.K. Tiwari were scheduled to land at the Tawang civil helipad at 1.20 p.m.
This is the second helicopter crash in Tawang district bordering China. On 19 November an Indian Air Force Mi-17 chopper had crashed killing all the people on board.
