Rohit Sharma’s maiden test as opener: Full list of records

Rohit Sharma set the record of hitting most number of sixes in a single test. Rohit Sharma hit 13 sixes in India’s first test against South Africa.

Rohit Sharma in his maiden test as an opener became the sixth Indian to score a century in both the innings during India’s opening test against South Africa at Vishakhapatnam. India won the test by 203 runs after South Africa was dismissed for just 191 runs in their second innings on the fifth day of the test. 

Rohit Sharma became the 6th India to score a century in each innings of a test after legendary Indian cricketers including Sunil Gavaskar (thrice), Rahul Dravid (twice), Vijay Hazare and Indian skipper Virat Kohli and teammate Ajinkya Rahane.

Rohit Sharma also set the record of hitting the most number of sixes in a single test. Rohit Sharma hit 13 sixes in India’s first test against South Africa, including 6 sixes in the first inning and 7 sixes in the second innings. 

Sharma surpassed Pakistan’s Wasim Akram, who had held the record previously with 12 sixes in a single test match. The record was set during Pakistan vs Zimbabwe in 1996/97. India’s previous best sixes record in Tests was held by Navjot Sidhu, who had hit eight sixes against Sri Lanka in 1993/94.

Rohit with his total of 303 runs also made the record of scoring the maximum runs in his maiden test as an opener. The previous record was held by Tillakaratne Dilshan, who made 215 runs in his maiden test as an opener against New Zealand in 2009. 

Rohit also became the first player to score a century in each innings of his maiden Test as an opener.

Rohit Sharma also became the first cricketer to score over 50 runs in seven consecutive innings in India. The previous record of 50-plus score in six consecutive innings was jointly held by former West Indies player Everton Weekes, India’s Rahul Dravid and Zimbabwe’s Andy Flower. Sharma’s score in the last 7 innings includes 82, 51*, 102*, 65, 50*, 176 and 127.
