Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh gave away the prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for 2009 and 2010 to 20 scientists for their achievement in the field of science and technology on 20 October 2010. For the first time since the inception of the prize, three of the awards were bagged by women scientists. CSIR's award for S&T Innovations for Rural Development for 2009 was awarded to Indian Oil Corporation's Research and Development Centre. The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize was instituted in 1957 by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in honour of its founder Director.
