Supreme Court of India cancelled 49 Mine Leases in Karnataka

Apr 18, 2013 14:20 IST

The Supreme Court cancelled 49 mine leases in Karnataka. The court accepted most of the recommendations of the Central Empowered Committee on mining issues in Karnataka. The Supreme Court ruled that illegal iron ore mining on the Andhra-Karnataka border would remain suspended till demarcation of the boundary between these two states is completed.

The Central Empowered Committee (CEC) set up by the Supreme Court to investigate illegal mining in Karnataka submitted its final report on 4 February 2012. The committee recommended the cancellation of leases of 49 mines that have violated the terms of their licence. It also recommended the auction of these leases.
