Significance

• The move aims to encourage more involvement of children in creative activities on those days.

• It will also help establish a good rapport between students and teachers and help in their personality development.

Previously, the UP government led by Yogi Adityanath decided to do away with the khaki uniform worn by students of government schools.

Hence, from the new session in July, government school students will be seen wearing a new uniform comprising pink-and-white check shirt with brown collar and brown trousers for boys and similar shirt with brown skirt for girls and senior level girls would be seen wearing brown salwar, red kurta and a brown dupatta.

Background

• There are around 1.78 crore children studying in 1.68 lakh government schools in 75 districts of the state.

• The schools include 1.14 lakh primary schools (class I -V) and 54,000 upper primary schools (class VI-VIII).

• The decision to change the uniform was taken after the state’s Chief Minister expressed his unhappiness on the dress and compared it with the uniform of guards.

• The khaki uniform was introduced in 2012 when the Samajwadi Party came to power, replacing the traditional navy blue shorts and trousers for boys and skirts and salwars paired with sky blue shirt and tunics for girls.

New state CM Adityanath is extremely keen on delivering all the BJP promises of providing free books, uniform, shoes and school bags to poor students from 1 July to 10 July 2017.
