Law and Legislative Affairs Department is an individual unit within Secretariat of Chhattisgarh Government. The Department is headed by the honorable Law Minister. Major work of this Department is vetting/ drafting of ordinances/bills, publication of Acts and Ordinances in Official Gazette. The method of legislation is synchronized by applicable provisions of the Constitution, regulations of Business of Chhattisgarh Government and the Law Department Manual.
All rules, bye - laws, regulations, notifications, orders etc. is prepared by the department concerned. Subsequently a draft is sent further to the law department for judgment as well as selection. The draft is scrutinized by the law department with regards to its lawful legitimacy and duly vetted draft is launched to the department for additional action for instance publication in the Official Gazette etc. This department is also answerable for the work in correlation with elections to the Vidhan Sabha and Lok Sabha and matters auxiliary thereto, diverse works relating to administration of Civil, Justice, Criminal & all administrative matters pertaining to the magistrates is acted upon by the law department.
Law Department is managerial division for State Legal Services Authority, comprised under Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, the Hidaytullah National Law University formed under the Hidaytullah National University of Law as per Chhattisgarh Act 2003, Madhyastham Adhikaran formed under Chhattisgarh Madhyastham Adhikaran Adhiniyam 1983.
This Department is also organizational department of High Court and compacts with all matters between High Court and Government.
