The Dental Council of India is a statutory body established under the Dentist Act, 1948 with the prime objective of regulating dental education, profession and its ethics in the country. Total 224 dental colleges are functioning in the country with an annual intake capacity of about 16,930 students in BDS course during the academic session 2006-07. The total no. of registered dentists as on 31st May, 2006 is 78,578.
