This celebration traces its roots back to the inaugural recognition of IWD by the United Nations on March 8, 1975.
According to Google’s blog, the significance of this date is marked by two pivotal Women’s Day demonstrations in history—one in Saint Petersburg and the other in New York City. Despite occurring in different years and locations, both rallies shared common goals, advocating for gender equality encompassing fair employment, safe workplaces, voting rights, and the ability to hold public office.
Today's IWD marches continue to address contemporary challenges, focusing on issues such as gender and racial wage gaps, reproductive rights, and the prevention of violence against women. It serves as a platform to celebrate the remarkable women who have transformed society, tirelessly fought for equality, and set positive examples for people worldwide.
The strides women have made over the years owe much to the courageous acts of those who came before them. The Google Doodle pays tribute to these trailblazers and acknowledges those who continue to carry the torch forward. On International Women’s Day 2024, let’s celebrate the ongoing journey towards equality and express gratitude to those who have paved the way for a more inclusive future.
