Every year on August 29th, National Sports Day is observed to celebrate the accomplishments of Indian athletes and raise awareness of the value of sports in everyday life. This day's significance has expanded beyond simple celebration in recent years, reflecting the changing sports scene in India.
Examining how sports as a career are quickly gaining traction in India is essential as we celebrate National Sports Day 2024. Here is what the data and insights from the Indian Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF) research mention.
The Growing Popularity of Sports in India
Cricket has always dominated Indian sports, as it has taken priority over other sports. However, during the last ten years, there has been a noticeable change in India, with more people gaining interest and participating in sports like football, badminton, wrestling, and kabaddi. In addition to giving players a platform, the continuous development of professional leagues like the Indian Super League (ISL), Pro Kabaddi League (PKL), and Indian Premier League (IPL) has strengthened the nation's sports infrastructure.
The triumph of Indian athletes at international competitions like the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, and Asian Games serves as a further evidence of this growth. Millions have been inspired by the accomplishments of sportsmen and women like PV Sindhu, Neeraj Chopra, and Bajrang Punia, who have made sports to be viewed as a respectable career choice.
Sports as a Profession: A Transformative Journey
The transformation of sports from a hobby or secondary career option to a respected profession in India has been remarkable. Various factors have contributed to this change some of which are mentioned below:
Increased Investment in Sports Infrastructure:
Significant expenditures in sports infrastructure have been made by the Indian government and private organisations. The construction of top-notch training facilities, sports academies, and international competition management has greatly aided the growth of sports in India.
The IBEF mentions: “Sports infrastructure across the country rose as the sports industry grew. Renovation of stadiums, training facilities, academies and sports complexes were some of the prominent infrastructure developments. These developments help in creating employment opportunities as well as boost tourism in the respective areas the events are being held.”
Emergence of Professional Leagues:
The establishment of numerous professional leagues in diverse sports has given athletes a stage on which to demonstrate their abilities and make a living. In addition to drawing elite players from all over the world, leagues like the IPL, ISL, and PKL have given athletes stable incomes through large contracts.
The IBEF states: “IPL in cricket, ISL in football, PKL in kabaddi and several other professional leagues have been established and the success of these leagues has been the major reason for growth of the Indian sports industry. The introduction of these leagues helped to gain massive viewership, sponsorship, and massive investments that aided the economy.”
Corporate Sponsorship and Endorsements:
The growing involvement of corporate sponsors has transformed the financial dynamics of sports in India. Companies are increasingly recognising the value of associating with sports and athletes, leading to a surge in sponsorship deals and endorsement opportunities. This trend has elevated the status of athletes, making sports a lucrative profession.
Media Coverage and Digital Platforms:
You cannot undervalue the role that the media plays in promoting sports. Sports are now more accessible to the general public thanks to extensive coverage of sporting events, live broadcasts, and the growth of digital media. Through social media, athletes and fans have been able to interact and build a strong fan base that inspires and supports them.
IBEF states: “There was substantial increase in revenue for various broadcasters as broadcasting rights for major events gained more importance. To secure exclusive broadcasting rights, media companies pay a large sum that leads to increased competition and investment in broadcasting.”
IBEF report further adds that, “In 2023, 536 brand endorsement agreements were made in various sports; 436 of these endorsements, or 87% of the total value, were linked to cricket.”
As we celebrate National Sports Day 2024, it is evident that sports as a profession in India is on a growth trajectory. The combination of government support, corporate investment, and increasing public interest has created a fertile ground for the development of sports. The insights from the IBEF report underscore the potential of the sports sector in India, highlighting the opportunities that lie ahead.
