James Earl Jones was born on January 17, 1931, in Arkabutla, Mississippi. He suffered from a serious stammer in childhood, which he managed to reduce in high school with the help of an English teacher who advised him to read poetry aloud.

Jones initially joined the University of Michigan as a pre-med student, but he later decided to pursue acting instead. After college, he served in the military during the Korean War and then went on to focus on acting.

Acting Career

Jones first performed on Broadway in 1957 in Sunrise at Campobello. He gained fame as a prolific Shakespearean actor, performing in plays like Othello, Hamlet, Coriolanus, and King Lear with Shakespeare in the Park.

Jones won the Tony Awards for his performances in The Great White Hope (1968) and Fences (1987). He also received an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe nomination for his role in the 1970 film adaptation of The Great White Hope.

Jones is well known for voicing Darth Vader in the Star Wars series. He also provided the voice for Mufasa in The Lion King (both the original and the 2019 remake).

Personal Life

Apart from music, Jones was a family man. He was married to Cecilia Hart with whom he has a son, Flynn Earl Jones. Hart died from a heart attack in December 2016.
