Solar Eclipse 2024: List of Do’s and Don’ts During The Celestial Event

Solar Eclipse 2024: On April 8th, 2024, North America will be treated to a celestial spectacle which is a total solar eclipse. Often referred to as the Great North American Eclipse, this event will see the Moon completely obscure the Sun for a brief period, transforming day into a twilight-like darkness.

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, casting a shadow on a specific path across our planet. During a total eclipse, the Moon's apparent size is large enough to completely block the Sun's bright face, revealing the Sun's corona which is a faint, pearly white atmosphere surrounding the star.

The 2024 eclipse path will stretch from Mexico, through the United States, and finally into Canada. Those lucky enough to be positioned within this narrow path will experience totality, where the Sun is entirely hidden for a few precious minutes. 

NASA mentions: “On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk.”

Here is a list of precautions that you need to follow during Solar Eclipse 2024: 

Do's:

• Invest in Safe Solar Filters: Never look directly at the sun, even during an eclipse. Purchase certified solar filters specifically designed for solar observation. These filters should comply with international safety standards, such as ISO 12312-2.
• Find a Reputable Vendor: Get your solar filters from reputable astronomy stores, science centres, or online vendors specialising in safe solar viewing equipment.
• Try to View the Solar Eclipse Indirectly: Project the sun's image onto a white surface using binoculars equipped with a proper solar filter. This allows you to observe the eclipse safely with a group.
• Make it a Party: Share the experience! Gather friends and family and enjoy the eclipse together using safe viewing methods.

Don'ts:

• No Naked Eye or Sunglasses: Never look at the eclipse with your naked eyes or even regular sunglasses. Sunglasses, smoked glass, or any homemade filter do not provide sufficient protection and can cause permanent eye damage.
• Unsanctioned Telescopes/Binoculars: Using a telescope or binoculars without a proper solar filter is extremely dangerous. Don't risk your eyesight!
• Leave the Pets at Home: Just like us, pets' eyes are vulnerable to sun damage. Keep them indoors during the eclipse.
• Focus on Photography (Unless Prepared): Taking pictures of the eclipse with a regular camera requires a special solar filter attached to the lens. Leave serious astrophotography to the experts with proper equipment.

Additional Tips:

• Check the Path of Totality: The total eclipse, where the sun is completely blocked by the moon, will only be visible from a specific path on Earth. Find out if your location falls within this path to witness the most dramatic phase.
• Plan Your Spot: Look for an open area with a clear view of the sky. Avoid areas with tall buildings or trees that might obstruct your view.
• Be Weather-Ready: Eclipses can happen at any time of day, so dress accordingly for the weather forecast.
