PHYSICAL FEATURES
The second largest Indian state, lying between the Indo- Gangetic Plain in the north and the Deccan Plateau in the south. Its landscape, which is largely made up of wide-ranging plateaus, low hills and river valleys, ranges from 100 to 1200 metres. The land rises from south to north in the northern part of the state. The Kaimur Hills and the Vindhya Range are situated in the north and the west respectively. To the northwest side of the Vindhya Range is the Malwa Plateau, which rises up to 100 meters. The Bundelkhand Plateau lies to the north of the Vindhya Range.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
A sizeable portion of Central India was part of the Gupta Empire (300-500 A.D.). Central India was also part of the Mughal Empire. As first of all, Mahmud of Ghazni and then Mohammad Gouri incorporated some parts of Central India into their ruling territory of Delhi. Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore, the Gond Maharani Kamalapti and Queen Durgawati, etc., were women rulers whose names have left an indelible imprint on Indian history for their outstanding rule.

 11th century- The Muslims came into the state

 1 November 1956- Madhya Pradesh came into existence.

 1 November 2000 - being reorganised to create a new Chhattisgarh state.
