Recently, Israel made use of a multi-layer defense shield in order to block the mass drone and missile attacks by Iran on the territory of Israel. The defensive array comprised of the long-range Arrow-2 and Arrow 3 and the short-range Iron Dome.
Ever since 1991, when Israel came under the Iraqi Scud salvoes in the Gulf war, it has been working hard to improve its air defenses. Recently, the Iron Dome of Israel passed a big test. What is Israel's Iron Dome? What is the Arrow missile defense? Let us understand everything one by one.
The Arrow
Designed while keeping the Iranian missile threat in consideration, the long-range Arrow-2 and the Arrow-3 system is actually built for the purpose of intercepting ballistic missiles outside the atmosphere of the earth, with the help of a detachable warhead. This warhead actually collides with the target.
It is at a specific altitude at which the Arrow operates and makes a safe dispersal of non-conventional warheads possible.
The Israel Aerospace Industries is the main contractor of the project. Additionally, it is Boeing that is responsible for producing the interceptors.
The military of Israel stated on October 31 that it made use of the Arrow aerial defense system for the very first time since the outbreak of the conflict with Hamas on October 7 to intercept in the Red Sea, a surface-to-surface missile, fired in the direction of its territory.
It is on September 28 that a letter of commitment was signed by Germany with Israel to purchase the Arrow-3 missile defense system. The Arrow 3 missile defense system was purchased at a price of about 4 billion euros.
The Iron Dome
The Iron Dome air defense system was actually constructed for short range to intercept the rockets fired by the Hamas in Gaza.
The Iron Dome is constructed by the Rafael Advanced Defense Systems ( state- owned defense systems supported by the U.S.). It was in the year 2011 when it got operational. Every unit fires missiles that are radar guided to blow up threats that fall under short-ranges such as drones, mortars, and rockets in the mid-air.
As per Rafael, it delivered a total of two Dome batteries to the Army of the United States in the year 2020. Ukraine is also seeking a supply of the same for its war with Russia. It is important to note that Israel has only offered Kyiv with only civil defenses and humanitarian support so far.
