But are wormholes just a high-tech plot tool for films and books, or might they perhaps be real out there in the great beyond of space? Are Wormholes Real?

According to NASA, Wormholes are theoretically possible in Einstein's general theory of relativity, where gravity is the warping of spacetime. There is presently no observational evidence, though. But there are certain theories regarding the existence of wormholes such as:

Einstein-Rosen Bridges

Albert Einstein and Nathan Rosen envisioned wormholes as bridges between two black holes in 1935. These "traversable" wormholes would need exotic matter with negative energy to remain open, in violation of the laws of classical physics.

Exotic Matter Complications

Negative energy, a material that pushes gravity away is theoretically attainable with quantum phenomena such as the Casimir effect. But it is still beyond our means to stabilize a large-enough wormhole to travel through.

Quantum Simulations 

In 2022, researchers simulated a wormhole on a quantum processor, seeing behavior mimicking both quantum teleportation and gravitational dynamics. Although not an actual wormhole, this experiment connected quantum physics and general relativity, foreshadowing future advancements.

The Time Travel Through Wormholes

Do wormholes allow for time travel? The mathematics permit it, but practical challenges run rampant:

  • Causality Loops: Going back in time could cause paradoxes (for example, the grandfather paradox). Quantum effects or unknown physics may currently be proposed to prevent this.
  • Roman Rings: Matt Visser, a physicist, suggested that having several wormholes in a ring could get around stability problems, but this is only speculation.
