The bill put forward by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak that is designed to permit Britain to send asylum seekers to Rwanda who arrive in Britain through illegal means, was actually destined to go through a debate by the British Parliament for two days. There have been deep divisions in the Conservative Party with regard to the matter.
The UK Supreme Court stated last year that the policy was unlawful. The Prime Minister expects that after the new legislation gets passed, it will actually override all legal concerns. Sunak believes that such a legislation will stop the people from coming into the Channel in tiny boats.
The Rwanda Plan of Britain
It was in April 2022 when the Rwanda scheme was agreed upon by the Prime Minister Boris Johnson. The scheme aims to deter the migrants hailing from different parts of the world and coming to Britian through illegal means. Such immigrants also deal in people smuggling.
As per the plan, anyone and everyone coming into Britian through illegal means post January 1, 2022, were to be sent to Rwanda. This is a place situated about 4,000 miles away.
The very first deportation flight as per the scheme, however, was blocked by the judges.
It was upheld by the UK Supreme Court that the Rwanda scheme was actually unlawful. The Court believed that the scheme put the migrants at the risk of actually being set to their homelands, over even in other countries. However, this would put these migrants ate the threats of mistreatment.
While there haven't been any deportation so far, Rwanda has already been paid about 240 million pounds by the Britain.
It is also important to consider the capacity of Rwanda to accommodate all the immigrants. While there are thousands of migrants that Britain aims to send to Rwanda, the region only holds the capacity to accommodate a few hundred of them.
