Commencing its operations by March 31, 2025, the Navi Mumbai International Airport, now called as the Loknete DB Patil Navi Mumbai International Airport, is situated in the Raigad district of Navi Mumbai. The airport stands as an important need of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). Recently, Jyotiraditya Scindia, the Minister for Civil Aviation made a visit to the NMIA. The minister expressed that this is actually the country's project and not just that of Maharashtra's or Mumbai's. It is the Navi Mumbai International Airport Limited (NMIAL) that is developing the Navi Mumbai International Airport.

 

What makes the project special?

 

Scindia also said that the project is going to be connected via multimodal connectivity through metro, road, rail, and waterways. This makes the Navi Mumbai International Airport India's first airport with multimodal connectivity. The project will expectedly alter the aviation landscape of the Mumbai Metropolitan area.

Apart from this, there are other factors too that make the airport special. In the very first year of the commencement of the Navi Mumbai International Airport, the passenger capacity by a total of 20 million passengers per annum. Additionally, the passenger capacity will be augmented by 90 million passengers per annum after the final phase is completed. The NMIA is constructed in five phases.

What makes the Navi Mumbai International Airport unique is the fact that it would actually be the largest planned General Aviation facility in the country. It is going to hold over 67 General Aviation aircraft and more along with distinct heliport operations.

Additionally, the airport is going to make use of the right blend of futuristic elegance and traditional Indian ambiance. The passenger terminals are within walking distance from the check-in to the boarding gates which are extremely convenient.

Some more facts that make the NMIA a special project

 

First things first, one cannot miss talking about the terminal design of the airport. The terminal design of the Navi Mumbai International Airport is inspired by the national flower of the country, i.e. lotus. When seen from an aerial view, this lotus-designed terminal will give a robust visual impact.

Moreover, with the Navi Mumbai International Airport getting operational, Mumbai will become the first city in the country to hold two international airports. 

Additionally, the planning of the Navi Mumbai International Airport is done in such a way that it will be highly eco-friendly and energy-efficient. The operations of the airport will likely depend on the on-site solar power generation. Moreover, one may find only electric vehicles are going to be utilized at the station.
