Roberts won the competition with his rendition of Anthony Hamilton's "Her Heart" in the final. Jamal, who works as a physical education teacher in Meridian, Mississippi, impressed people all over the country with his heartfelt singing and inspiring story.

Jamal Roberts, who is 27 years old and teaches gym in Meridian, Mississippi, has really influenced people across the country with his emotional singing and a story that makes you feel good.
In the final season, Roberts received the most votes ever—roughly 26 million—and was declared the winner, becoming the first Black man to do so since Ruben Studdard in 2003. He is a father of three beautiful daughters – Harmoni, Lyrik and Gianna. As a father, he balances his family and career with grace and dedication.
He teaches at Crestwood Elementary and aspires to be a musician. He started his journey in church, where his musical grandparents helped him sing hymns and Motown covers. He auditioned twice for American Idol but didn’t get selected; however, he didn’t lose hope.
He took another chance, and this time, his heartfelt performance of Rick James’ “Mary Jane” truly captivated judges Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Carrie Underwood, earning him a golden ticket.

During the American Idol competition, Jamal Roberts sang very well and showed a lot of emotions in his voice. Some of his best songs were "First Time", "Just My Imagination", and "Heal".
A special moment was when he sang "Liar" with the singer Jelly Roll, who even said it was "Jamal's song". When Jamal went back to his hometown of Meridian, 20,000 people came out to celebrate him. People in Mississippi really loved him. He is one of only a few people from Mississippi to win American Idol, like Trent Harmon.
