Indian Institute of Technology Mandi is the first of the IIT’s to launch B.Tech programme in Data Science and engineering. The programme will train students in computer science, applied statistics, applied mathematics and machine learning which are required for data science and its applications.
The programme will be offered jointly by the School of Basic Sciences (SBS) and the School of Computing and Electrical Engineering (SCEE) from the academic year 2019-20 onwards. The programme will be covered in a 4 year period. Explaining about the programme, Timothy A Gonsalves, director of IIT Mandi mentioned that the B.Tech in Data Science and Engineering programme will train the students to collect process and study the large data sets which are collected by all-pervasive sensors. The programme will train them to discern the underlying pattern of the data and derive actionable insights in it. The students of this programme will be given complete expertise which will help them to develop in the changing world in the next few decades.
IIT Mandi also states that the programme will help the students to fulfill the rising demand of experts to capture, analyze and synthesize a large amount of data in numerous application domains and also convert the information into actionable strategies which are new scientific discoveries, business applications, policy-making, and healthcare.
Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi has a very unique course syllabus which is project-based and include interdisciplinary learning. In the last 2 years, the institute has launched six new masters programme which includes M.Sc Physics, M.Tech Power Electronics, and Drives (PED), M.Tech Structural Engineering, M.Tech Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI), M.Tech Communications and Signal Processing (CSP) and MA Development Studies.
IIT Mandi will also be introducing two new programmes which are B.Tech Physics and B.Tech- M.Tech Integrated Dual Degree Programme in Bioengineering from August 2019 onwards.
