Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi is set to launch a new Bachelors programme in Engineering Physics. The B.Tech programme will come into effect from the next academic year which starts in August. On Thursday, the officials of IIT Mandi confirmed that the programme will be jointly offered by School of Basic Sciences (SBS), School of Computing and Electrical Engineering (SCEE) and School of Engineering (SE) at IIT Mandi.
As per the officials at the institute, the curriculum of Engineering Physics will introduce the students to the different fields in pure as well as Applied Physics. Dr. Pradeep Kumar, Course co-coordinator, School of Basic Sciences, IIT Mandi, while elaborating about the programme informed that the course will bring forth several career paths in interdisciplinary areas such as Quantum Technology, Photonics, Nano-Electronics, and Artificial Intelligence. According to him, these fields are on the verge of becoming dominant areas in the coming future.
He also went on to add that the present time belongs to interdisciplinary areas and Engineering Physics which will act as a catalyst to reduce the gap between basic science and traditional engineering disciplines. This according to him will help in tackling the technological challenges of the coming generation which include fields like Quantum Technology, Artificial Intelligence, etc. He says that the programme will enhance the cross-functionality and will also help in bridging the gap between pure science and traditional engineering disciplines which by far have been pursued independently.
This is necessary as in today’s time most of the scientific and technological discoveries and breakthroughs happen in multidisciplinary environments wherein scientists from pure science backgrounds work along with engineers. Therefore it is important to inculcate both scientific and technological aspects Engineering Physics will help in this endeavor

Dr. Pradeep Parameshwaran, Dean (Academics) at IIT Mandi while talking about the importance of the programme highlighted that the principals of physics are fundamental to the theory and practice of engineering. He says that since IIT Mandi from the very beginning has believed in challenging rigid disciplinary boundaries and the programme offered reflects on the interdisciplinary outlook they feel that the engineering physics programme will appeal to all which include potential students as well as employers in the industry and academia.
