The Jadavpur University Convocation Scheduled to be conducted on December 24 lies uncertain as an emergency executive council meeting has been called today afternoon. The meeting has been called in order to discuss is the university will go ahead with the convocation ceremony with a boycott called against the university chancellor Jagadeep Dhankar by the students' organizations in the university.
As per an official statement released by the university, the Executive Council meeting will be conducted for discussing the future of the convocation ceremony after the student bodies of the university have submitted a memorandum to the university Vice-Chancellor Suranjan Das on Friday informing him their decision to boycott the event if the ceremony is attended by the Governor - Jagadeep Dhankar.
The Boycott Dhankar was called by the students from Jadavpur University this year and the convocation in the university is scheduled to be conducted on December 24, 2019. Debraj Debnath, General Secretary of Arts Faculty Students Union said that the University Chancellor and the governor of West Bengal are supposed to be present at the convocation ceremony and have urged all the students of the university to boycott Dhankar. He has also added that the students will be wearing black badges and will be holding flags during the convocation ceremony.
As per media reports, the authorities of Jadavpur University are keen on crawling out of the situation that they have landed themselves in after inviting the governor to the convocation ceremony during a time when the West Bengal state government has made it clear that it does not want any direct interaction between the governor and the universities.
When asked about why an emergency meeting was called, Jadavpur University Vice-Chancellor Suranjan Das said that he has received representations from many of the student organizations which state that they will be boycotting the convocation ceremony of the university if the governor attends the programmes. He also added that the students are the major stakeholders and he does not want any untoward incident to happen inside the campus.
Senior officials from the university have said that a low key convocation ceremony is likely to be conducted later without the special convocation in which the Honoris Causa degrees will be awarded to the celebrated individuals. As per reports, former secretary Salman Haider, Scientist CNR Rao, and author Sankha Ghosh were to receive honorary doctorate degrees along with the director of the Indian Statistical Institute, Sanghamitra Bandopadhyay.

The university officials have also faced a similar problem during the 2014 convocation where several students which also included gold medal winner from the Bengali Department, Geetashri Sarkar refused to receive their degrees from the then governor Keshari Nath Tripathi following the Hok Kolorob Movement.
