JEE Main 2022 – No of Attempts: With application process for JEE Mains 2022 about to commence shortly, one question that has been on the minds of aspirants is how many attempts will NTA allow for this year’s engineering entrance exam. Until now, typically, the NTA – National Testing Agency use to provide only two attempts for the JEE Main Engineering entrance exam. However, last year, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic and the board exams getting affected by it, the agency held JEE Main in four attempts i.e. one per month starting from February 2022. Here’s everything that we know so far about JEE Main 2022 and the No of Attempts Likely this year.
JEE Main 2022 Attempts Dependent on Class 12 Board Exams
One the main reasons for holding JEE Main exam in four attempts last year as to provide ample opportunities or chances to the candidates to appear for the engineering entrance exam irrespective of when their board exams were being held. Due to COVID-19, the schedule for Class 12 Board Exams 2022 across the country, including for Central Boards of CBSE and ICSE were disturbed majorly. In response to this, the NTA decided to hold exam in four attempts i.e. one per month starting from February. Looking at this, it seems that the time or month in which CBSE, ICSE and other State Board Exams for Class 12 student are held will play an important role in deciding how many attempts are allowed for JEE Main 2022.
NTA Director- General on JEE Main 2022 Attempts
Recently, this query of engineering aspirants about the number of attempts being allowed for JEE Main 2022 was also put before NTA Director-General Vineet Joshi. In response to this, Mr Joshi had also reiterated that the number of attempts for JEE Main 2022 will depend when the Class 12 board exams conclude this year. Therefore, simply put, as of now there is no clarity with regards to NTA’s stand on the matter. But, candidates should expect at-least two attempts off JEE Main 2022 exam being held this year.
Term 2 Exam and Omicron Virus Variant
For 2021-22 academic session, majority of the Central and State Boards are holding the annual Board Exams in two Terms. The term 1 of CBSE and ICSE Board exams are being held now while the Term 2 Exam will be held in March – April 2022. However, given the emergence of new variants, especially the Omicron strain of Coronavirus; many boards may decide against holding the Term 2 Exam if the number of cases increase drastically. In this case, holding JEE Main 2022 in multiple attempts may also be a challenge for NTA and in-turn the agency may decide to curtail or cancel a few attempts for the engineering entrance exam.

Internal Choice of Questions within Paper Expected to Continue
Another major relaxation that was offered to the candidates last year for JEE Main examination was provision of internal choice of questions. Taking into consideration that many school boards had decided to curtail the syllabus for board exam, the NTA had also provided candidates internal choice in the number of questions that they had to attempt in the JEE Main examination. Last year, for each section of JEE Main i.e. Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, candidates were expected to attempt only 25 out of the total 30 questions asked in the paper. This year, too the boards continue to reduce their syllabus; it is very likely that the internal choice option continues to remain for this year as well.
