A decision on the closing of schools in Kerala is expected to be announced by the officials today - January 14, 2022. Kerala state Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is expected to conduct a review of the COVID situation in the state and take necessary steps on whether to close down the schools or not.
Decision in question after spike in cases
The decision of closing the schools has been questioned and thought over by the officials since the time the state and country started reporting an increase in the COVID cases. As per local media reports, Education Minister V Sivankutty has told reporters that the CM will review the situation and make a prompt decision.
Although officials believe that the new Omicron variant may note be a threat to the students, making a decision on this is important considering the health of the students. The final decision on the same will be announced by the CM only after conducting discussions with the health experts.
Schools to close only for some classes
The decision on the closing of schools will be only for a few classes as per reports and not everyone. According to the local media, if a decision on this is announced it is likely that higher secondary classes for school students and final year classes for college students will continue in the offline mode.
No official announcements have however been made by the state government yet and once the decision is made, students will be informed of the same. Parents, teachers, and others have also been informed that in case the schools are decided to be closed it is likely other restrictions will be imposed in the state to stop the spread of the virus.
The number of COVID cases has also been increasing in Kerala with the state reporting over 13000 new cases and 110 deaths.
