Maratha Reservation Bill 2024: Maharashtra state assembly has unanimously passed the Maratha Reservation Bill provisioning 10% reservations to members from the Maratha community in education and government jobs.
According to the provisions of the board, the students are candidates belonging to the Maratha community and are eligible for reservations on grounds of social and educational backwardness. The bill mentions that the state government have the right to prepare a list of communities that are socially and educationally backwards in the state. It also provides details on the findings of the Maratha survey undertaken by the Maharashtra State Backward Class Commission (MSBCC)
Maratha Survey Findings
A total of 1.6 crore families were a part of the survey of which 28% of the population belonged to the Maratha community. The survey also mentions that 21^ of the Maratha families were below the poverty line or had a yellow ration card as compared to 18% of the open category population.
The survey further showed that 94% of the farmers who committed suicide in Maharashtra belonged to the Maratha community. The survey mentioned that the percentage of the Maratha community is low in secondary and higher secondary education. The Maratha community has inadequate representation in state government jobs and requires a quota.
The survey also highlights that the community faces illiteracy and lack of access to graduate, postgraduate and vocational education due to which their access to jobs was limited.
