The University Grants Commission in its latest notification has asked the universities across the country to promote apprenticeship, internship embedded degree programmes in universities and affiliated colleges and institutions. The University Grants Commission has asked the institutions in the country already offering the internship embedded programmes to submit the details by October 10, 2021, through a google form.
The UGC earlier released guidelines regarding the internships, apprenticeship embedded degree programmes as per the budget announcement of 2020-21 with an aim to make fresh graduates employment ready.
The programmes are as per the National Education Policy 2020 and emphasise conceptual understanding of the subject and course curriculum. The idea of internship-embedded degree and diploma programmes were announced in the Union Budget 2020-21 to improve the employability of students.
The former Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal had launched the guidelines for Higher Education Institutions to offer internship-embedded Degree programmes. The UGC in December 2020 stated that internships and apprenticeships are essential apart from the quality of education.
The UGC has further added that the minimum relationship between the general degree curriculum offered and the requirement of the employers calls for an effective remodelling of the degree programmes offered in the colleges driven by the changing needs in the industry and service sector. The apprenticeship and internship embedded programmes can play a pivotal role with respect to the requirements of the present time.
