West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) has stated that it will be considering the advice of the higher education department on introducing a semester based curriculum for the class 11 and 12 students in the state board henceforth.
The newly appointed WBCHSE president Dr. Chiranjib Bhattacharya stated that the mode of conducting the Higher Secondary Exams next year will depend on the instruction of the state government and the COVID-19 situation at the time.
Semester Based Curriculum
As per media reports, WBCHSE may consider the semester-based curriculum model formed on the CBSE and CISCE boards in class 11 and 12 standards from the next academic year or later. The WBCHSE president while speaking to the media stated that the board has stated that the Council will go by the higher education department recommendations and advice of the minister as things cannot be completely devised by the board as there are factors to be considered. He further indicated that WBCHSE will not undertake any reform on its own either in 2022 or 2023 and things will be clear later depending on the COVID-19 situation.
The state government appointed Dr. Bhattacharya former pro-vice-chancellor of Jadavpur University as the chief of WBCHSE after removing Mahua Das from the post following the protests across the state by students who failed the Higher Secondary Examinations.
The examinations could not be conducted due to the pandemic situation this year and the students were evaluated based on an alternative assessment system based on the marks obtained by the students in the previous examinations. The students who failed the exams were roughly around 18000 and they were declared passed after re-evaluation following the intervention from the state government.
