Group Discussion: War is the only way to preserve peace

The history of mankind has had many landmarks. Unfortunately some of these landmarks and turning events have been full of violence brought by fights, battles and wars. Gautam Buddha, Jesus Christ, Mahatma Gandhi and many other great men have been teaching the world to practice non-violence and pursue peace. They did succeed to a certain extent as well, however, some people, in their mission to achieve success and power, have used force and war. It appears that the violence runs in the very blood of men because it is the survival of the fittest and the weak will have to succumb to and suffer at the hands of the one who is strong.

Nobody hopes for a war as it bring with it death, sufferings, loss, misery and destruction. Everyone wishes for establishment and preservation of peace as it bring prosperity, happiness, stability, security and a thriving atmosphere to live in. But how do we really go on to preserve peace. Many would say that the best way to preserve peace is with peace. They may believe in and express great hope that extending sympathy, understanding and peace will help in making war a thing of the past. But there are some who believe that those who live by the sword should also perish by it. They may also assert the use of armaments and wars to achieve the greater aim of worldwide peace because they believe that preparedness for war will actually bring the best security for peace. There have been many instances in the past that even prove this point of view. In many cases one strong country has taken over one or more weaker countries by means of war.

War is a necessary evil and preparedness for it, therefore, becomes a must. Every nation in today’s scenario understands the importance of keeping themselves ready and prepared for war. They are all set to resist their neighboring country’s evil intentions. The simple and pious wish for peace is no more helpful for any country to keep them out of danger. Whether they like it or not, they need to be prepared for any eventuality or else its people will not feel safe which will result in utter chaos. Peace, here, is being preserved by preparing for war and survival. This fact is blunt, unflinching, cold and harsh.

The two greatest powers in the present world are America and Russia. They have a wide range of high-tech armaments ready to unleash war at any moment. Both the countries do not see eye-to-eye and have been working to expanding their respective economic and political influence across the globe. Since the two are aware of the deadly stockpiles of weapons and ammunitions of the other, they have not been attacking one another. Because they understand that the other can match the onslaught. Contradictory to the notion of maintaining peace by peace, it is the war or the preparedness for war that is maintaining the peace in the present world. And it appears as the only viable option for now.
