How to Become Professor in University or Degree College

    Eligibility Criteria for Faculty Posts

    The Candidate should have Master’s Degree in the concerned or relevant subject along with good academic record throughout one's academic career to apply for the post of Lecturer/Demonstrator.

    Candidates seeking promotion to the post of Assistant Professor should have the above mention qualification and should have qualified National Eligibility Test (NET) or equivalent from UGC/CSIR or equivalent, alternatively, PhD in the relevant discipline.

    To be promoted to the post of Associate professor, an Assistant professor along with the required mentioned qualification should have acquired minimum 6-8 years experience and should have published 5 research papers/Journals/Book of high quality listed in one of the recognised journals.

    To become a Professor, an Associate Professor should have Ph.D. in the concerned field and should have published work of high quality, should be actively engaged in research of high quality with a minimum of 10 Publications as books or research or policy papers with evidence of Published work, as per the specific norms of institutions, candidate should have acquired minimum 12-14 years of experience in Teaching/research field.

    Apart from the Academic merit and teaching/research experience, as per the UGC guidelines, the candidate should have minimum required API or Academic Performance Indicator. Criteria for Calculation of API have been laid down by the UGC. API score is given based on the number of Direct Teaching Hours, Domain Knowledge, Participation in the examination and Evaluation and Student feedback.

    Stages to be promoted to Post of a Professor

    Aspirants can start their Teaching career as Lecturer and Demonstrator or directly as Assistant  Professor after acquiring requisite qualifications.

    Assistant Professors are promoted or may apply for the post of Associate Professor in a different institution after acquiring minimum required experience and fulfilling criteria such as minimum required publications,  API score and other.

    An Associate professor is promoted to the post of Professor after attaining 12/14 years of teaching/research experience and publishing minimum stipulated number of Books/research papers.

    Selection Procedure to the post of a Professor

    Minimum Qualifications Required is NET/SLET.  NET- National Eligibility Test (NET) is conducted by UGC (University Grant Commission). The candidate should have Master's Degree with at least 55% Marks from a recognised University to qualify this examination. After qualifying this examination, the candidates are eligible to apply for the post of Assistant Professor. SLET- The candidate should have a Master Degree with at least 55 % Marks to qualify State Eligibility Test (SLET).

    There is a key difference Between NET or SLET is that the NET qualified candidate can apply for the post of assistant professor at any institute or college of India. Though the SLET qualified candidate can apply only for the state level universities or colleges.

    The Short listing of candidates for the Post of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor by the selection committee as per UGC Norms (eligibility criteria, Academic Performance Indicator (API)).

    Salary Structure and Other Allowances of a Professor

    The salary package depends on the experience, locality or the college. The minimum salary package starts from Rs. 30,000  and can go beyond Rs. 1 Lakh. It depends on the experience, college, and the location. So, this was all the Information which you need to become a professor.
