IIT JEE Examination will be held in two phases – IIT JEE Main and IIT JEE Advanced. It is scheduled in the month of April and May. IIT JEE Main exam will be held in the month of April and IIT JEE Advanced will be held in May. All questions asked in this examination are of objective nature.

Students generally consider objective questions easy as compared to subjective ones. This is because of the fact that they need not to solve the questions step by step. Instead of that they only have to approach the correct option somehow.

Students follow many methods to approach the correct answer. The most straight forward method is to solve the question and then choose the correct option. But sometimes it is difficult to solve a question or the solution is quite lengthy, in such cases we can guess the correct option depending on various factors.

*Remember guessing is the last option to approach the correct answer. It has also its own risk associated with it. Wrong guessing can lead negative marking and this is why negative marking is added to discourage students. Never go for blind guessing. Guessing is an art. It requires various constraints to be satisfied before reaching correct option.*

Students can use the below mentioned tips and strategies to guess correct option for both online and offline IIT JEE exam:

** (1) Be Calm and understand the questions**

Before you attempt the question in IIT JEE Examination read the question very carefully. Identify what is asked in the question and what information has been provided in the question. Then recall the formulae associated with the question.

**(2) Check the dimensions**

This technique plays a very important role in Physics Paper. The answer should be dimensionally correct. Suppose in the question we are asked to find the correct equation of time period. Now, we know that the dimension of time is second so, only those options may be correct which have dimension of time i.e. second.

Let us understand this with the help of an example.

In this question the correct option is (d). But without solving this question and just using the method of dimensional analysis you can find that option (a) and option (b) are incorrect because they do not have same dimensional formula as of emf, the quantity which is asked in the question.

Dimensional formula of emf = M^{1}L^{2}T^{-3}I^{-1}

Dimensional formula of options (a) and (b) = M^{1}L^{3}T^{-3}I^{-1}

**(3) Use method of Assumptions**

In some questions it is easy to put some values from our side so that we can approach to the correct option. It makes question easy and complete solution can be avoided. This is also one of the most important methods used in the examination. This method is almost similar to the substitution.

Let us illustrate this with the help of simple example:

**(4) Start from options**

Sometimes it is easy to start with options. You can put the values given in the options in the equation given in the equation to reach at the correct option.

One way to solve this problem is step by step solution. Another way to solve this is start from the options.

From option 1,

Put x = 1 in the equation given in the question. On putting x = 1 the above equation is satisfied and hence is the solution of the equation given in the question.

Hence the correct option is (a)

**(5) Discard highest and lowest outliers**

Outliers mean choices having extreme values. It can either be extreme maximum value or extreme minimum value. In the question asked in any competitive examination extreme values are generally avoided. If you have any question which have answers in numerical values, discard the extremes. In 70 percent cases, the highest and lowest values are not right.

** (6) Understand the process of elimination**

All the tips mentioned above help in the process of elimination of options. You can eliminate options to reach at the final option.

In the questions in which you do not have any idea about how to solve question, follow the process of elimination. Use above methods to eliminate incorrect options. If in the end of the elimination process you are remained with two options, then you can take a chance.

**(7) Memorize easiest topic to get good marks**

It does not matter whether the question is asked from easier topic or tough topic, it carries equal marks. So, it is very important that you do not miss questions from easier topics. Memorize easiest topics so that you can score more and save time during examination.

Some easy units in Mathematics are:

- Algebra
- Differential calculus
- Complex numbers
- Permutation and Combination
- Probability
- Matrices and Determinants

In organic Chemistry give special attention to **Stereochemistry**, **GOC** (General Organic Chemistry) and **Functional Group Analysis**. In inorganic Chemistry, structure is very important. Also, students should pay special attention to **Chemical Bonding** and **Coordination Chemistry**.

In physics some easy units which can give you good marks are:

- Mechanics
- Electrostatics
- Electrodynamics
- Modern Physics
- Optics and SHM Waves

**Conclusion:**

The above guessing methodology will help you in reaching to the correct option. But you should always remember that this is the last option and you should use these methods only when you are able to eliminate some options through these methods.
