Want to get into IIM A for PGP 2018-20? Then target this magical percentile number in CAT 2017

Aug 8, 2017 11:55 IST

India’s top B-school – IIM Ahmedabad has announced its admission policy for the institute’s flagship PGP 2018-20 programme. The announcement comes in the wake of the release of the official CAT 2017 notification which came out on 26th July. As per the newly announced admission policy of IIM Ahmedabad, the sectional cut-off for selection of candidates has been set at 70 percentile. In addition to this, MBA aspirants need to score an overall 80 percentile score in CAT 2017 to be considered for the selection to the top MBA college in India.

What do sectional IIM A’s sectional cutoffs mean?

Sectional cut-offs announced by IIM Ahmedabad essentially means that any candidates scoring an overall minimum percentile of 80 and minimum 70 percentile in each of the three sections in CAT 2017 will be eligible for first level selection to PGP 2018-20 batch. Simply put, it means that candidates scoring lower percentile (overall or sectional) will have an opportunity to be considered for the selection to IIM A’s flagship programme.

However, candidates must keep in mind that, the CAT 2017 score / percentile is only one of the many factors that are looked at by the IIM A’s admission committee. In addition to this, the committee also looks at overall academic record of the candidate as well as work experience and background of the candidates for final selection.

Why I did not get a call from IIM despite 99+ percentile?

How is this year’s IIM A cut-off different?

While Indian Institute of Managements are known to announce the overall and sectional cut-offs every year after the official release of the Cat notification; this year the announcement has been special. This year IIM Ahmedabad has opted to keep their selection cut-offs relatively low compared to last few years.

Almost all other IIMs including the new ones have a much higher CAT 2017 cut-off for the selection of candidates for PGP programmes. For instance, all other IIMs require a minimum sectional percentile cutoff of 80 while the overall 90 percentile is required to be considered for selection.

The relatively low CAT 2017 cutoff announced by IIM Ahmedabad has spread smiles on the faces of nearly 2 lakh MBA aspirants who are competing to grab that elusive seat in top MBA college in India. While the lowered CAT cutoff may sound surprising coming from India’s top B-school but even last year IIM Ahmedabad had lowered the minimum qualifying percentile from 90 to 80 overall.

Does this mean CAT 2017 score is not important?

MBA aspirants planning to get selected for IIM A must keep in mind that the above given numbers are only minimum qualifying criteria or percentile required to be considered for first stage selection. But the actual cut-offs will be much higher than the minimum qualifying percentile numbers provided above. So, please do not be under the impression that scoring 80 percentile overall and 70 percentile in all three sections would guarantee you a seat in IIM Ahmedabad.

Even IIM Ahmedabad in it’s admission policy document has mentioned that “Performance in CAT is an important input in the admission process. Candidates should note that it is important to perform well in each section of the test. In addition to the performance in CAT, IIMA uses academic performance of the candidates throughout their academic career up to the bachelor’s level for shortlisting for AWT & PI.”
