JEE advanced is the second-level examination, after JEE Main, for admission into the engineering programs of the prestigious IITs or the Indian Institutes of Technology. This exam is conducted by the 7 zonal IITs on a rotational basis as per the guidelines of IIT exam governing body - Joint Admission Board (JAB).

Let’s find out the answers to some of the commonly asked questions related to this exam.

Q. 1: Why is JEE Advanced conducted after the JEE Main?

While JEE Main is the stage 1 examination for admission to IITs, JAB conducts JEE Advanced to shortlist students because there are a limited number of seats in engineering courses at IITs and the number of aspirants is high. Therefore, to shortlist the most meritorious candidates for IITs, JEE Advanced is conducted.

Q. 2: Who all are eligible for appearing in JEE Advanced?

Only 2, 24000 candidates who qualify the first level of admissions to IIT i.e. JEE Main will be eligible for appearing in JEE Advanced.

Q. 3: How many attempts can be made for JEE Advanced?

A candidate can attempt the JEE Advanced a maximum of two times in consecutive years.

Q. 4: What changes have been introduced in JEE Advanced?

• JEE Advanced is now a completely computer-based exam.
• The number of candidates for appearing in the exam has been increased by 4000, i.e., now 2, 24, 000 JEE Main qualified candidates can appear for the JEE Advanced exam

Q. 5: Does the JEE Main Rank affect the JEE Advanced rank list?

JEE Advanced Rank list is prepared based on the aggregate marks in the JEE Advanced Paper I and Paper II. JEE Main scores are only considered to shortlist candidates for JEE Advanced.

Q. 6: Is the JEE Advanced rank affected by Class 12 marks?

No. JEE Advanced rank is not affected by Class 12 marks as the rank list is prepared only on the basis of marks scored by candidates in Paper I and Paper II of JEE Advanced. The Class 12 marks are important for final admissions to IITs where candidates need to satisfy one of the following criteria:

1. Secured at least 75% (65% for SC/ST/PWD candidates) aggregate marks in Class XII or equivalent exam
2. Be within the category-wise top 20 percentile of successful candidates in their respective Class XII (or equivalent) board examination.

Q. 7: Which are the institutes other than IITs that consider the JEE Advanced score for engineering admissions?

There are 6 centrally funded Institutes that offer admissions on the basis of JEE Advanced rank:

• Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (IISc)

• Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) located in: Berhampur, Bhopal, Kolkata, Mohali, Pune, Thiruvananthapuram and Tirupati

• Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), Thiruvananthapuram

• Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT), Rae Bareli
