Q. Why does Valli stand up on the seat? What does she see now?

Ans. Valli stood up on her seat because her view was obstructed by a canvas blind that covered the lower part of her window. Moreover, due to her small height she was not able to have the full view of the outside. Therefore she had to stand on her seat to look over the blind. Then she saw that the road was very narrow, on one side of which there was a canal and beyond which she could see the palm trees, grassland, distant mountains, and the blue sky. On the other side, there was a deep ditch followed by many acres of green fields.

Q. What does Valli tell the elderly man when he calls her a child?

Ans. Actually, Valli thought herself to a grown up and mature girl. When the elderly man called her a child, she told him that there was nobody on the bus who was a child and she had paid her full fare of thirty paise like everyone else.

Ans. Valli did not want to make friends with the elderly woman because she found her to be an unrefined lady. She was having big holes in her ear lobes and ugly earrings in them. The way she was chewing the betel nut and the betel juice was almost about to spill over her lips, resisted Valli to be sociable with her.
