(a) How many years ago did Gijubhai write this letter?

(b) Find out how old your grandfather and grandmother were at that time.

(c) This letter talks about many different birds. How many of these birds have you seen?

(d) How many other birds have you seen? Which ones?

(e) Have you seen a bird’s nest? Where did you see it?

Answer.

(a) Gijubhai wrote this letter in 83 years back in 1936.

(b) My grandfather and grandmother were not born at that time.

(c) I have seen dove, crow, koel, pigeon and weaver bird.

(d) I have seen several other birds like sparrow, parrot, myna, owl, eagle, peacock, etc.

(e) Yes, I have seen a bird’s nest. It was made on the branch of a tree in the park.

1. Which is your favourite bird? Can you show your friends in the class how it flies, and what sound it makes?

Answer.

My favourite bird is peacock. It cannot fly high.

2. Guess what this bird is – ‘A crown on the head and coins on the tail, So many shades of blue from top to tail.’ Clue: It is our national bird.

Answer.

This bird is peacock.

3. Do you know of any other bird that makes its nest in a tree trunk like the barbet does?

Answer.

Yes, woodpecker also makes its nest in a tree trunk like the barbet.

4. If there is a nest inside or around your house, look carefully at it. Remember, do not go too near the nest, and do not touch it. If you do, then the bird will not come to the nest again. Observe the nest for some days and note down the following things:

(a) Where is the nest made?

(b) What is the nest made of ?

(c) Is the nest ready or are the birds still making it?

(d) Can you recognise which bird has made the nest?

(e) What things does the bird bring to the nest?

(f) Is there any bird sitting in the nest?

(g) Do you think there are any eggs in the nest?

(h) Can you hear any sound like ‘cheechee’ from the nest?

(i) If there are chicks in the nest, what do the parent birds bring for them to eat?

(j) How many times in one hour do the birds come to the nest?

(k) After how many days did the chicks leave the nest?

(l) Make a picture of the nest in your notebook.

(a) The nest is made in the balcony of our neighbour’s house.

(b) It is made of straw and sticks

(c) The nest is ready.

(d) Yes, pigeon has made this nest.

(e) Pigeon brings hay and sticks to the nest.

(f) Yes, a pigeon is sitting in the nest.

(g) Yes, there are eggs in the nest.

(h) Yes, I can hear sound like ‘cheechee’ from the nest.

(i) Parent birds bring seeds, grains, fruit crumbs for them to eat.

(j) The birds come for about two to three times in one hour.

(k) After 25-32 days the chicks leave the nest.

(b) I have sixteen teeth.

(c)  Yes, some of my teeth have fallen.

(e) I have four new teeth.

(f) Six of my milk teeth have fallen but two teeth have not come in their place.

(a)  If you did not have front teeth (both top and bottom) how would you eat a guava? Act and show how.

(b) You have your front teeth, but no teeth at the back. Someone gives you a roti. Show how would you eat it.

(c) You do not have any teeth in your mouth. What kind of things would you be able to eat?

(d) Draw a Picture in your notebook-How would you look if you had no teeth?

(e) Find out from old people who do not have teeth-what are the kind of things that they cannot eat?

Answer.

(a) If I did not have teeth, I would eat a guava by cutting into pieces only.

(b) I would that roti with my front teeth like an old man does.

(c) I would not be able to eat solid food items but will have to take soft and liquid foods only.

(d) Students themselves must draw it.

(e) Old people who do not have teeth cannot eat hard food items like nuts, fried grams, etc.
