4. Give reasons.
(i) The rainforests are depleting.
Answer:
The rainforests are depleting because of the large scale developmental activities. Land is being cleared continuously for agriculture, cattle pasture, wood, mining, setting up of industries, construction of roads, etc. Due to the increased deforestation the topsoil of land is getting washed away, decreasing the soil fertility. As a result, trees do not grow properly in such soils that is resulting in depletion of the rainforests.
(ii) Paddy is grown in the Ganga-Brahmaputra plains.
Answer:
Cultivation of paddy requires sufficient water. Now the amount of rainfall in the Ganga-Brahmaputra plains is quite high, which makes it a suitable place for the growth of paddy. Hence, paddy is grown in the Ganga-Brahmaputra plains.
