Work
A plastic technologist creates products by processing the raw material through various stages. Their work also involves research, innovation and launching of new products. .
Qualification
To get admission in BTech in plastic technology the candidate should have secured at least 50 percent marks in 10+2 along with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. For securing an MTech degree or a PG Diploma in this field, a BTech/BE degree or a diploma in chemical engineering/ plastic-rubber technology/mechanical engineering/textile engineering is compulsory. The M.Sc. pass candidates in Physics or Chemistry can also get an MTech degree in plastic technology. The candidates who have passed GATE get preference in admission to MTech.
Personal Qualification
Apart from educational qualification youngsters also need to be industrious, imaginative and interested in Physics and Chemistry.
Opportunities
The government of India has granted the plastic industry a high priority sector status. The demand for plastic in the domestic market is increasing at the rate of 10 to 14 per cent /annum. The plastic industry’s annual turnover in India is worth Rs 3500 crores, which is expected to increase to Rs 6500 crores by 2014. According to an estimate the increasing plastic consumption can lead to the creation of employment opportunities for 1.5 million people in the next few years. After the completion of the course in plastic technology youngsters can get employment in computer, electrical or electronics related fields. A plastic technologist can also be employed in public sector undertakings likeoil companies, oil and natural gas corporation, engineering plants, petrochemical companies, polymer companies, Petroleum Conservation Research Association of India etc. Apart from this marketing and management related sectors offer lucrative opportunity.
Income
A plastic technologist gets an initial salary package of Rs. 10,000-12,000 in the public sector while in the private sector he may earn higher than that. After 2-3 years experience one can easily earn between Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000.
