Presidency University of Kolkata is brainstorming regarding launching Performing Arts Course there from its next academic session.
The decision to launch these courses has been ratified by the university's governing body and a request has been sent to state higher education department for approval of faculty members. Leading names in classical music, dance and theatre from across the country will visit Presidency to groom students.
Likewise decision has also been tried out in the School for Arts and Aesthetics at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
Tabla players Bickram Ghosh and Malhar Ghosh were ecstatic that Presidency planned to start courses in performing arts.
"We are not going to start dance, music and drama departments as those are commonly understood. Practical classes will be there to hone one's skills. But, our school of performing arts will try to establish the basis of these art forms as they evolved since ancient times," said university vice-chancellor Anuradha Lohia.
