We have a stereotype that students studying from Hindi medium are not that bright as students studying from English medium. Though Hindi medium students have the great conceptual knowledge, what they lack is expressing their thoughts as they lack self-confidence because they lack fluency in the English language especially, when they are required to be in an environment where English is a major language. This is a common problem faced by all Hindi medium students as they have studied every subject in Hindi language and, English as a language subject only. It is a problem just as faced by students studying in English medium for grasping understanding in Hindi and Sanskrit subjects. But, the concern is that English medium students have a choice of not studying Hindi and Sanskrit after Class 10th but Hindi medium students do not have an option of dropping the English language in their academics.
Moreover, the problem for Hindi medium students begin when in Class 11th and Class 12th, they start preparations for competitive exams like IIT JEE, WBJEE etc. and they have to compete with other students who have education in English medium. In this environment, Hindi medium students are constantly worried about thoughts like they won’t be able to compete with English medium students at national level. Though competitive exams now provide the question papers even in regional languages and the test medium is choice of students but still, the English medium students have the advantage at large because the main language of the test paper is English.
If we are not talking about just the competitive exams, there are other problems faced by Hindi medium students such as slow speed of learning in the classroom of English medium courses, not being able to express their thoughts and ideas, problem asking their doubts, hesitate during group discussions etc.
For a successful career, the English language is the prime medium of communication in any organisation. Therefore, it is essential for Hindi medium students to tackle their problems arising due to not being fluent in the English language before they begin their career.
