Production Designer

Production Designer is mainly associated to Film and Television Industry. He or she is responsible for the filming of films, TV programmes, Music videos and advertisements. Production designer has a key creative role in preparing motion pictures and TV serials. They work in close coordination with director and the producer to select settings and style to present the story in a scenic format.
So they manage many other things besides the acting and dialogues to depict the scenes, people and the situations in the production of films or serials or the stage performances. Production designer takes part in everything including the set designing, light and action.

Work

Production designer has to first go through the story to identify those points which may enhance the impact. Then they prepare a design budget and also the scale drawing or model. They have to hunt for a Suitable studio and locations. They also identify the equipment and other things which would be required for production. Production designer has to supervise the work the producer and director are satisfied.

Qualification

No specific degree is required to become a production designer but the training in theatre, performing arts, interior, landscape, 3D, graphic design etc. definitely helps. Meanwhile a number of institutes are offering certificate, degree and diploma courses in production designing. Minimum qualification for these courses is 12th std. pass.

Personal Qualification

It is a creative work so creative and analytical mind is the basic pre requisite. Production designing is impossible until a person has the ability to transform ideas in to reality.

Opportunities

Film, theatre, television, music album, production house, advertising etc. require a production designer. But before graduating to a production designer, a person should try to handle the tasks like those of the production assistant, art or design assistant etc. After that depending on the experience and working capability a person can become a production designer. Freelancing in this field also offer handsome remuneration.

Income

This profession involves equal amount of hard work as well as the glamour. A production designer has to work for long hours. Yes they are paid handsomely. Their remuneration is mostly commission based.  On the other hand while working as a production assistant, art or design assistant can fetch you about Rs. 25000.
