Vel Tech University, Avadi Chennai - Only private university from India to get project on health monitoring of bridges and heritage structures from IC-IMPACTS – pan Canadian organisation
Vel Tech Dr.RR & Dr.SR Technical University, Avadi ,Chennai in association with Victoria University, Canada have launched a program for full-field health monitoring of long bridges and heritage structures using Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles under the aegis an international body called IC IMPACTS. Dr.U.Chandrasekhar,Pro Vice Chancellor of Vel Tech University highlighted that this effort is the first of its kind in India and the results of this effort would be useful for ensuring safety and integrity of several structures in the country especially those located in inaccessible regions.
Dr.Rishi Gupta of Victoria University, Canada explained that IC-IMPACTS is a pan-Canadian multi-sectorengagement between India and Canada that brings together researchers, industry innovators, community leaders, government agencies, and community organizations, to take up impact focussed research and develop solutions that are relevant to water management, public health and safe infrastructure and thereby enhance the quality of life of millions of people in Indian and Canadian communities. In the current project, the researchers from Vel Tech University and Victoria University aim to deploy small sized unmanned aircraft for evaluating the structural integrity of long span railway bridges and large sized heritage structures through multiple sensors and provide in-situ information on structural safety. Both India and Canada have aging and deteriorating railway infrastructure. The inspection of railway bridges is of prime importance as it provides connectivity links for industrial and domestic movement. With more than 50,000 major bridges in the Indian Railways, many are more than 100 years old. Given their age, there is an imminent need to monitor the condition of these bridges on a timely basis. At present the bridge inspection is mostly confided to visual means, which is inadequate and also not reliable. Many inaccessible areas of the bridge are not inspected. Real time monitoring of structural integrity of bridge structures can provide safety to the public and ability to detect early damages and cut doe the cost and time associate with repair.This research project will synthesize the state-of-art technologies available for health monitoring of civil structures, by efficiently incorporating UAVs, sensors and contemporary electronic systems into bridge inspection and thus contribute to the infrastructure management of both the countries.
