The Mamata Banerjee government came up with a new amendment and this time for government educational institutes. The West Bengal government is now keen to keep twenty percent of all seats in government educational institutions for Other Backward Classes, including the Muslims.
A bill in this regard is soon to be placed by the state education minister, Bratya Basu early in August 2012, in the assembly monsoon session. This decision has come after the government gave effect to a proposed move by the Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee government before the 2011 assembly polls to earmark seventeen percent of all state government jobs for OBCs, including the Muslims.
The bill was earlier passed early on 6 July 2012 after which the present West Bengal government added another thirty five categories . The West Bengal government reworked on the OBC list by including sixty five groups in the backward classes category (category A) and seventy eight groups as backward classes (category B) and enacted the West Bengal Backward Classes (other than Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes) (Reservation of Vacancies in Services and Posts) Bill, 2012.
