Did you know that Mock Drills, Fire Drills, and Evacuation Drills are all different? These are often considered as the same thing but they’re not. It’s important to understand the purpose of each of them and why it is important to practice these.
What is a Mock Drill?
Mock drill is a general term for practice training that mimics any kind of emergency-fires, chemical spill, earthquakes, medical situations, or security threats-to assess preparedness, coordination response, and determine vulnerabilities in procedures. Mock drills can be simple or complicated and include multiple teams (emergency, medical, security) and multiple scenarios beyond evacuation.
What is a Fire Drill?
A fire drill is a particular kind of mock drill aimed at simulating only a fire emergency. The main objective is to practice safe and efficient evacuation when a fire alarm is heard, so that all are well aware of the evacuation routes, assembly points, and overall fire safety procedures. Fire drills are less sophisticated than large-scale mock drills, typically involving only building occupants and straightforward evacuation procedures.
What is an Evacuation Drill?
Evacuation drill is a simulated exercise centered on the safe relocation of individuals from a building or location, independent of the nature of the emergency (fire, chemical spill, earthquake, etc.). It is part of both fire drills and other simulation drills, stressing orderly evacuation procedures and the accounting for all members at a safe muster point.
Drill Type | Scope | Purpose | Typical Scenarios |
Mock Drill | Broad (all emergencies) | Test overall emergency preparedness | Fire, chemical spill, earthquake, etc. |
Fire Drill | Specific (fire emergency) | Practice fire evacuation procedures | Fire only |
Evacuation Drill | Specific (safe evacuation) | Practice orderly evacuation | Fire, chemical, earthquake, etc. |

All fire drills and evacuation drills are types of mock drills, but not all mock drills are fire or evacuation drills. Fire drills focus on fire emergencies, evacuation drills focus on the act of evacuating, and mock drills simulate any emergency to test overall preparedness.
