Geography
This central European country is a fertile, rolling plain lying east of the Danube River and drained by the Danube and Tisza rivers. In the extreme northwest is the Little Hungarian Plain. South of that area is Lake Balaton ( 648 sq km).

Historical Background
Hungary was part of the polyglot Austro Hungarian Empire, which collapsed during World War I. The country was under Communist rule following World War II. Under the leadership of Janos KADAR in 1968, Hungary began liberalizing its economy, introducing so-called "Goulash Communism." Hungary held its first multiparty elections in 1990 and initiated a free market economy.
